About Bird
Crystal Bird Caviel is a local Austin theatre maker and therapist who is committed to providing therapeutic services, connection, and community to currently and formerly incarcerated individuals.
As the founder of SpiritHouse, she implemented a pilot “Drama Therapy Lab” at the Travis County Corrections Complex. As Director of SpiritHouse Theatre Company, Bird has created a community theatre company that focuses on the preservation of the Black oral tradition, seeks to illuminate Black actors and playwrights, and heal ancestral trauma through ritual performance.
Bird’s extensive theatre experience includes participating in 15 professionally produced shows; co-writing, producing, and starring in an original web series; and creating the inaugural SpiritHouse performance: “Honoring Our Truth Teller: An evening of tribute to Literary Queen Toni Morrison.” Bird is proud to be a part of the Rude Mechs, an award-winning, internationally known theatre group. Standout performances include her roles in Not Every Mountain and Fixing Troilus & Cressida. Her solo show, Sick/Lionheart, is also in the works to be remounted.
